Protest Song

EDWIN STARR lyrics - War

War, huh, yeah
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Uh-huh
War, huh, yeah
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Say it again, y'all

War, huh, good God
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Listen to me

Ohhh, war, I despise
Because it means destruction
Of innocent lives

War means tears
To thousands of mothers eyes
When their sons go to fight
And lose their lives

I said, war, huh
Good God, y'all
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Say it again

War, whoa, Lord
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Listen to me

War, it ain't nothing
But a heartbreaker
War, friend only to the undertaker
Ooooh, war
It's an enemy to all mankind
The point of war blows my mind
War has caused unrest
Within the younger generation
Induction then destruction
Who wants to die
Aaaaah, war-huh
Good God y'all
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Say it, say it, say it
War, huh
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Listen to me

War, huh, yeah
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Uh-huh
War, huh, yeah
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Say it again y'all
War, huh, good God
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Listen to me

War, it ain't nothing but a heartbreaker
War, it's got one friend
That's the undertaker
Ooooh, war, has shattered
Many a young mans dreams
Made him disabled, bitter and mean
Life is much to short and precious
To spend fighting wars these days
War can't give life
It can only take it away

Ooooh, war, huh
Good God y'all
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Say it again

War, whoa, Lord
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Listen to me

War, it ain't nothing but a heartbreaker
War, friend only to the undertaker
Peace, love and understanding
Tell me, is there no place for them today
They say we must fight to keep our freedom
But Lord knows there's got to be a better way

Ooooooh, war, huh
Good God y'all
What is it good for
You tell me
Say it, say it, say it, say it

War, huh
Good God y'all
What is it good for
Stand up and shout it
Nothing

This song basically is saying we have better options than war. It is saying that nothing good comes out of war. The singer is pointing out things like "
But Lord knows there's got to be a better way" and "War can't give life, It can only take it away." These lines mean exactly what they say, there has to be some other option besides war, because men and women keep dieing in war and we can't replace them.

In 2010, are men and women equal in the United States?

For the most part, I think men and women are equal in 2010 America. One reason why is that men and women can both fight in war, both run for political spots and parties etc, and vote as well. Another reason is that women have practically the same job opportunities that men do. Also, in sports, for example, women are allowed to play football and wrestle in high school, which once was basically an all boys sport. On the other hand, women tend to make less money when working (75 cents compared to a man's $1).

JFK Field Trip Reflection

I learned that JFK was a senator for Massachusetts. I also learned he was born in Boston. Another thing i learned is that JFK was in the Navy and fought in Vietnam. The element that i found most interesting in the field trip was the short film on the Cuban Missile Crisis and how we set up a Naval Blockade and ordered them to stop production. I honestly don't have any suggestions on how to improve the field trip in the future besides maybe spending more time watching short films because that is where i learned the most information, and it also put what we learned in class to actual visuals; making the information more understandable. I really learned more than i actually expected to so i feel the field trip was very helpful. I think that JFK was a great president for the time being. One reason is because he got elected at the perfect time because the United States needed a guy like JFK to bring them hope and change that JFK planned on bringing. I don't necessarily think JFK was one of the best presidents of all time simply because he got cut short on his term; but he started huge strides on civil rights(which LBJ carried on) and ended a crucial problem with Cuba.

My predictions on the end of the book would be that the yooks drop the bitsy big-boy Boomeroo bomb on the zooks. The yooks dominated as the only people/ species alive. The yooks also decided that it is better to eat your bread with the butter side down instead of up. The zooks will no longer live with the yooks, the end.

Great Depression Article

I honestly do not think that our country will go through another great depression. One reason is because I think we learned from some mistakes, not all, but some from our last depression. Another reason why i think we wont ever go through another great depression is because our "great" depression would be a lot less worse than the last one. We would just basically be downgraded in everything we owned or do. For example, in the article it said "We might see former lawyers wearing knockoffs, doing their back to school shopping at Target or Wal-Mart rather than Banana Republic and Abercrombie & Fitch." I really don't worry about it too much. There would obviously be sacrifices for my mom, brother, and I to make in order to deal with depression. We would cut back on unnecessary things, stop going out as much and eat home, and maybe cut TV and the Internet. If my mom lost her job my brother and I would definitely help out with the bills and food. The world would look the same in 21st century depression according to the author, the depression would be more private than public. I agree with the author.

Simpsons Assignment

Part 1:
The producers did a decent job portraying the 1920's Prohibition in Springfield. I do not think the accuracies outweighed the fictional comedy, but there was an equal number of accuracies and parts of comedy. I definitly enjoyed the episode; it was hilarious. The elements of 1920's life that was portrayed well was Mafia paying off the cops to keep them quiet about the alcohol bootlegging.

Part 2:
If i was to edit a scene, i would edit the one where people enter the speakeasy "Moe's." The producers didn't portray the aspect that getting into a speakeasy was hard. I would put gates out at the front door of the bar and have Homer and Bart as the guards to the bar. This would show how hard it was to get into a speak-easy.

Should true Americans have to give up personal freedoms during a time of war?

Should true Americans have to give up personal freedoms during a time of war?

Yes, I think that true Americans should be willing to sacrifice whatever freedoms they have during a time of war. During every battle or war, we will all face some sort of adversity and have to sacrifice something for our country. Whether it be actually fighting in the war, or having to give up personal freedoms during a time of war. You would not be what they call a "true American" if you were not willing to sacrifice personal freedoms for your country.
